How do I get paid online as a freelancer?

Send each client a link to a page where they pay by card or PayPal. Use a set price for a project or a session, a box where the client types the amount for a bill that changes, and recurring payments for a monthly retainer. PayPal and Stripe charge their standard processing fees on any platform.

Why Payly

One link per project

Type what the work is for and the price, then choose Once. The link switches itself off when it is paid. Put its address next to the amount on your quote or invoice.

Changing bills and session packs

For hours that vary, let the client type the amount, at least $1.00. For sessions, set the price of one and turn on quantity, so a client can pick 3 and see the total.

A receipt for them, a record for you

Each client gets a receipt page and an email, with no account needed. You see the payment under Payments with their email, and they are added to Customers.

How to get paid with a payment link in Payly

You set the terms once. The client pays on PayPal's or Stripe's own page.

  1. Make the link

In Your sites, click New and choose Payment link. Type your business name once, then what the payment is for. Choose a set amount or Payer chooses, and Once or Many times.

  2. Connect PayPal or Stripe

Open Settings, then the Payments tab, and connect PayPal, Stripe or both. Your first link also asks you to connect your free Cloudflare account. Test mode lets you try a link without real money.

  3. Send it to your client

Click Copy link and paste it into an email, a chat or next to the amount on your invoice. A new link goes live at once, with nothing to publish.

Honest answers

How do I bill a monthly retainer?

One payment link takes one payment at a time, so it cannot charge every month. For a retainer, use a payment form with recurring payments. The Monthly retainer template starts you with a plan choice and a company name box, and each month's receipt comes by email.

Can a link ask for a project name or a session date?

No. A payment link asks for an email, and a phone number and address if you switch them on. What the payment is for is the title you type. For a choice of 30 or 60 minutes and a preferred date, start from the Book a session template on a payment form.

Can I use one link for all my clients?

Yes, if it can be paid many times. That suits a standing price, such as one session. Anyone with the address can pay it, so for a project make a link that can be paid once, and send it only to that client.

Can a link add sales tax or a discount?

No. A payment link adds no tax, shipping or discount codes. Include anything extra in the amount you set.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no monthly fee, no transaction fee and no paid tier. PayPal and Stripe charge their standard processing fees on each payment, as they would on any platform. How can this possibly be free?
