Etsy fees explained, every fee with an example

Etsy has no monthly plan for most sellers, so it can look cheap. The cost shows up per listing and per sale instead, and several fees stack on one order. Here is every fee, what it is charged on, and what a few real orders cost.

Every Etsy fee, one at a time

These are the fees for US sellers. Etsy's fee policy is the source, and Etsy can change it.

FeeAmountWhen it is charged
Listing fee$0.20 per listingWhen you create or renew a listing. Listings last 4 months and renew automatically at the same price.
Transaction fee6.5%On the item price plus any shipping and gift wrap you charge.
Payment processing3% + $0.25Per order, on the total including shipping and tax (US bank account).
Offsite Ads15% or 12%Only when an Etsy ad off the site leads to a sale.
Currency conversion2.5%When your listing currency differs from your payout account currency.
Set-up feeOne timeSome new shops. The amount is shown during shop setup.
Etsy Plus$10 a monthOptional subscription.

How each fee works

Listing fee

You pay $0.20 each time you create a listing, and again each time it renews after 4 months. A shop with 100 active listings pays about $20 every four months to keep them up.

Transaction fee

The 6.5% is on the item price plus the shipping and gift wrap you charge, so charging for shipping raises the fee. It is not applied to sales tax for US sellers.

Payment processing

Etsy Payments takes 3% + $0.25 per order. The percentage applies to the whole order total, including shipping and tax. The rate depends on the country of your bank account.

Offsite Ads

Etsy advertises listings on other sites, and when one of those ads leads to a sale, you pay a percentage of the order total. Shops that made under $10,000 in the past 365 days pay 15% and can opt out. Once a shop reaches $10,000 or more, the rate is 12% and it is required. Each attributed order is capped at $100 in fees. Because you pay only when the ad produces a sale, this fee is zero on most orders and large on a few.

Currency conversion

If you list in one currency and get paid in another, Etsy charges 2.5% of the sale amount.

Set-up fee

Etsy may charge a one-time, non-refundable set-up fee on some new shops. Etsy's 2024 announcement named $15 for the first group of shops, but the amount you see during set-up is the one that counts.

Worked example 1: a $50 item, shipping included in the price

  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of $50 = $3.25
  • Processing: 3% of $50 + $0.25 = $1.75
  • Listing fee: $0.20
  • Total: $5.20, or about 10.4% of the sale

That assumes no sales tax and no ad. If the order came from an Offsite Ad at 15%, add $7.50 and the total is $12.70, about 25%.

Worked example 2: a $40 item with $8 shipping charged

  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of $48 = $3.12
  • Processing: 3% of $48 + $0.25 = $1.69
  • Listing fee: $0.20
  • Total: $5.01 on a $48 order, about 10.4%

Worked example 3: a large order with an ad

A $900 order from an Offsite Ad at the 12% rate would be $108, but the cap holds it to $100. Add the 6.5% transaction fee ($58.50) and processing ($27.25), and the fees total about $185.75 on $900, around 20.6%.

Etsy is a marketplace, and that is the point

These fees pay for something real: Etsy brings shoppers who are already looking for handmade, vintage and craft items. A new seller with no audience may find that worth the price. The tradeoff is that you are one shop among many, and your listing fees and transaction fees continue as long as you sell there.

Many sellers use Etsy to be found and a store of their own for repeat customers. If you want your own store, Payly charges no monthly fee, no transaction fee and no commission, and customers pay your own PayPal or Stripe account directly. On the $50 order above, the only fee would be PayPal's or Stripe's: about $2.24 with PayPal Checkout, or $1.75 with Stripe. The catch is that Payly does not bring shoppers to you. It is your own store, so you bring the visitors.

You can bring your listings with you. Etsy lets you download your listings as a file, and Payly imports it. See Move from Etsy.

Is there a monthly fee on Etsy?

Not for a basic shop. Etsy Plus is an optional subscription at $10 a month.

Can I turn off Offsite Ads?

Shops under $10,000 in sales over the past 365 days can opt out. Above that, the ads are required and the rate is 12%.
